Dr. Mitchell Lee
Dr. Mitchell Lee is an accomplished Ophthalmologist and Vitreoretinal Surgeon specializing in retinal disease, complex anterior segment surgery, cataract and lens surgery, as well as refractive and general ophthalmology. Dr. Mitch completed his medical studies at the University of Sydney Medical School and Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, graduating with First Class Honours. He went on to complete his ophthalmology training through the prestigious Prince of Wales Hospital training network in Sydney.
Following his general ophthalmology training, Dr. Mitch pursued further specialization in complex anterior segment surgery and medical retina under the mentorship of Professor Minas Coroneo. He completed an advanced fellowship in vitreoretinal surgery at Westmead Hospital, which is renowned for its expertise in diabetic retina surgery and its status as one of the busiest retina centers in the world. He also gained extensive experience in middle segment and complex anterior segment surgeries during this fellowship.
In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Mitch was one of the inaugural Sarks Medical Retina Research Fellows at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney, continuing the pioneering research legacy of John and Shirley Sarks in the early detection and characterization of age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
As the Head of the Ophthalmology Department at Nepean Public Hospital, Dr. Mitch oversees the delivery of specialised eye care and surgery in both urban and rural settings. His commitment to providing ophthalmic services to regional and remote communities is demonstrated by his work with the Outback Eye Service established by Professor Fred Hollows. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Mitch volunteered to spend six months in Broken Hill as the sole ophthalmologist for the community, providing critical care during an unprecedented time. He continues to serve this community as a Visiting Medical Officer at Broken Hill Hospital and also travels to Bathurst several times a year to offer subspecialty expertise in medical and surgical retina.
Dr. Mitch is a strong advocate for minimally invasive surgery and the use of the latest technologies in ophthalmic care, ensuring the best outcomes for his patients. His expertise in vitreoretinal surgery allows him to treat some of the most serious and vision-threatening conditions encountered in ophthalmology. Dr. Mitch is dedicated to restoring and preserving vision for his patients, utilising advanced techniques and a compassionate approach to care.
